Differentiated Curriculum
Unit
Vivian Humphrey, M.
Ed.
Lesson # 9
Whole Group Activity
Students will create a scenario in which each must face some great hardship
and must use all resources available to meet the challenge. They will work
in dyads and will be instructed to pay attention to their feelings and
those of their partner.
Concluding Activity
Students will gather into a circle to process the day's experiences. How
did it feel to know that they had the resources to meet such a big challenge?
If this was not the case, what might they need to add to the resources
available to them? Counselors will take care to see that each child has
a positive experience, even if we have to go back and do the scenario over
again and give him the needed resources. Each child is to leave the group
feeling strong.
Counselors will meet to process and to evaluate the progress.
They will see individual students as needed.
Lesson # 10
Objective 1.2.2 Students will identify ways
in which they might use the next three years to build skills and relationships
that will prepare them to meet future challenges.
Whole Group Activity
Students will discuss with counselor facilitation the work of the unit.
The focus will move to what challenges might reasonable await them when
they are ready to enter sixth or seventh grade. What do they know of life
now among middle schoolers? How are they like each other, and in what ways
are they different? Is there someone whom they greatly admire that age?
What is it that is admirable? Do they want to be like that person?
What does each of these children need to learn how to do so that he
can be the kind of middle schooler he wants to be? What personal qualities
need to
be developed? What tasks need to be undertaken so that each can develop
as he want to develop?
Each student will write a plan in his log.
Concluding Activity
Gather in a circle.
Students will share their writings if they so choose.
Group will discuss ways in which they might be supportive of each other,
good influences, as they work toward their goals.
